Welcome!
This exhibition explores the writings and experiences of European women who visited Greece during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Insightful, detailed, and often humorous, the women’s travel writing reveals how the authors and their companions responded to the region’s evocative Monuments and Landscapes. Their interest in the diverse environments of Greece also drove the women’s Scientific Pursuits. Traveling during periods of significant historical change, the women wrote about the social circumstances they observed Politics and Positionality. Frequently in conversation with one another—as well as the Ancient and Modern authors who came before them—the women offered Travel Tips to their readers who might attempt their own adventures. We hope you enjoy your journey through the exhibition!
